What are plow blades?

Plow blades are narrow cutting tools that are attached to a static or vibratory plow for installing underground utilities with minimal ground disruption. The blades cut a slit in the ground and place a utility cable or conduit at a specified depth below the surface.

Plow blades come on two different styles.

Chute blade: Chute blades have a hollow tube or "chute" on the back of the blade. The cable or conduit being installed runs down this chute and out the back of the blade, placing it at a specified depth. Plow machines using chute blades typically have a reel carrier attachment that carries the product to be installed while the machine is plowing.

Pull blade: Pull blades have a bell or "bullet" on the bottom of the blade that displaces the soil and creates a hole for the installed product to pass through. Unlike chute blades, this blade style pulls the product through the ground, much like directional drilling. This blade style is typically used in large diameter installations than chute blades.

The type of plow blade you need depends on the specific requirements of your project, including the depth/width required to install the product and soil conditions. Consult with a plowing expert to ensure you select the plow blade for your operation.

Plow blades require resurfacing from time to time depending on ground conditions and time of use. If a worn plow blade is identified before the wear exceeds the ability to rebuild it, a qualified welder can replace the cutting edges, hard face the body of the blade, and replace any other items that are worn on the blade. If the wear exceeds the ability to rebuild the blade, replacing the blade is recommended.
